HOW WE BEGAN

The company that became HGE was started in 2005 by three people who wanted to do things differently: two Indian entrepreneurs and a Frenchman who had spent years as a product engineer with Decathlon. We had met the year before. The idea was simple to say and hard to do — build a workshop in India that worked to European production standards, and followed the way the good European houses actually organised their production, rather than the way things were usually done here.

Our first products were bridlework and saddles. The very first saddle we made was a racing saddle. One of our first customers was JMR in Belgium, and it was through customers like them that we learned. We were taught to make equestrian goods by some of the best names in the world, and we started with leather only, because that was what we knew and wanted to master.

WHY WE WENT DIRECT

There is a hard truth in private-label manufacturing. You spend years developing a product with a client, you put your expertise into getting it right, and then the finished design can be taken to a cheaper factory and you are left high and dry. It happens, and it has happened to us. Equitanum is our answer: a range we develop, make and stand behind under our own name, sold directly to the people who ride.

HORSES AND TESTING

We will be plain about one thing. There are no horses at our facility in Kanpur, and we do not pretend otherwise. What we can say is that every product we sell has, at some stage, been tested by professional riders, and we have working tie-ups with stables in Europe where our products go for testing before they reach you.

WHERE ARE WE TODAY

HGE today is a certified export house with more than 300 skilled people, making equestrian goods, riding footwear and pet accessories, among other things, from our facility at Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, India.
